Stories of Double Life(1)
In this project of "double life" , I mainly focus on the identity issues, using storytelling as a method in design, in order to create emotional connections between object and human. My goal is to use objects as metaphors in the story, to reflect and address the reallife situation of identity issues.
STORY 1-TWO SOULS IN ONE BODY
Material: Walnut wood, Polyester resin.
Dimesion: 180x180x100
"Two souls in one body" is a secret box combining polyester resin and walnut wood. Wood part carved by hand, plastic part is casted in mold, and later on modified and polished. By creating interaction between two very different materials-wood being natural and alive, resin being unnatural and dead, the piece tend to reflect the double or multi-personality in human.
The key of emotional reaction is to allow personal interpretation, thus create authentic experience and connections with each individual person. This is not easy to achieve. The piece here is a try out on this direction, opening up individual interpretation of functionality relating to the object, on another level creating human-object interaction, reflecting the personality of the people using it. The choice once been made by people-putting certain miniature with certain very personal meaning on either side of the box-hidden in wood or shown in resin "cabin", the "double" personality or the tendency of this phenomenon is also determined at the same time.
The wood part is hand carved. Resin part is casted, and then modified and polished by hand. The whole working process is time and effort consuming. With this "slow" working process. I give my regards to artists and craftsperson working with tacit knowledge, making "slow art" almost as manifesto against quick consumption we are facing today. With all my respect, I salute them.
