Memory is something we create in our mind-a mixture of truth and imagination. It is all about details of reminiscent and often there is absence of time. Fragments and pieces of the reality are the relics of personal history. Memory gives us identity and it is ever moving and changing. Hidden and beyond literal description, the feeling we have about everything around us are like blurred pictures ,deformed and montaged in our own particular way. I am fascinated by the fact that through memory, we are building up our “reality” in a way only we can. I want to capture the subtle feeling of memory-how it is partly forgotten, partly enlarged, and montaged by ourselves spontaneously. I try to express it through my work and evoke emotional connections with the viewer.
I approach this subject in two different ways-one more abstract/organic(“interpretation”), relating to my personal memory, using traditional Chinese painting paper and ink, the other more objective/geometric(“deconstruction”), integrated of geometrical forms and photography of air, water, sand, earth etc. They become naturally together in the end.
Together with a video, I hope the audience will relate to their personal fragments of memories and emotions by observing the mobile sculpture, involving interaction, and being in the light-shadow meditational ambiance.
This project is exhibited in Rovaniemi Design Lounge in Rovaniemi, Finland, during 5.28-6.20, as part of WCD(World Design Capital) 2012 Helsinki-Rovaniemi.
