Through Happenings, the separation between life, art, artist, and audience becomes blurred. Enlargement, Deformation, Frangments, shadows. Fragile moments. it is not really what happened. we are like directors of our memory. our mind montage the moments according to our will, edit them together. our life can only be one long shot. however our mind is fond of doing montage. It is not about reality. Rather the deformation of it。 It is a mixture of truth and imaginary. And it is all about details of reminiscent and often there is absence of time and people. Fragments and pieces of the reality are the relics of personal history. And the feeling of “me” is what happens when the “artificial” and “real” are mixed, then some fantastic things happen in-between. Memory gives us identity and it is moving and changing. Hidden and beyond literal description, the feeling we have about everything, about a time, a place, beauty, love and about ourselves are like blurred picture in our mind and deformed and montage in our own particular way. We are building our reality in a way only we can. I grew up in an ancient capital city in China, where people are easy going and easy to get satisfied. They grew corns in the fields just as the way they wrote poems on rice paper, which now remains silent like the long indescribable history of their hometown. No one laugh out loud in happiness, no one shed tears on tragic moments. I guess it is because the heaviness of story they already carry. There is no main celebration about events, holidays. They even don’t like to party. They are not talkative and mostly shy. All the strong emotions seem to be put into the form of an ancient opera. They will stand up on the plateau, sing and shout to the sandy wind as their ancestors did thousands of years ago. Same melody, same wind and same yellow dirt on their shoes. It was the spring just before I left home. One day my father insisted to drive me to the mountains. We went up the plateau. There was this plain, so empty u can just see the sky and the city far away. The coldest time just passed, the grass was still yellow. Strangely there was those people, lots of them. Old, young, whole family, little kids in their colorful spring sweaters, people with their dogs. They just stood there look up to the sky, silent, only sound was the wind blowing. I looked up. The sky was occupied by colorful kites. They were so high up. Butterflies, fishes, birds, big octopus, airplanes…floating, flying in the wind. They almost look still. The air was full of a smell of growing plants. I heard the wind tearing up the paper. No one said a word. Then some blurry thing come up in my head, flying kites was the thing I did every spring when I was a kid. I almost forgot I ever did that. I almost even never went up the plateau again. I almost lost the feeling of the wind controlling the string in my hand and leaving those red swelling marks on my skin. I watched this silent celebration of the coming spring. Then my father hand me the string. I used two rolls that day. My kite was too high to be seen. In the end it was cut off by the wind. I never found it back. “...Aesthetic pleasure is associated with renewal, rather than with objectification.”
Memory is a media we create in our mind, to look at the past, to reassure and for our built-up identity to rely on. However it is never objective. It is not about reality but rather the deformation of it. It is a mixture of truth and imaginary. And it is all about details of reminiscent and often there is absence of time and people. Fragments and pieces of the reality are the relics of personal history. We are building our reality in a way only we can. To archive is
to gather together signs and to move them from a private realm to a public one with the purpose of holding on to the source material of memory (Derrida 1995); it enables memory by becoming a repository of the impressions of our past. In society and culture it is important to give voice and visibility to those who are suppressed, unheard and lacking positive representation. We claim that the use of personal photographs with the process of intimate listening and discussions can extend the story and its private and intimate content to a public and cultural context. This kind of action can reveal the cultural taboos and everyday practises that shape concepts of self and knowledge of the world. This is the last week before the fair. I have a new record of being in the wood workshop until 2 in the morning.
Main stuff I did: finishing the back boards(L shape is tricky which cant be done by machine), glueing the frame and the back(L shape is tricky too), glueing the needled felt in the back, sanding, waxing and glueing the round shape felt on the surface. The project is finished on Thursday 2 oclock in the morning Then fotoshooting and packing. I am leaving for Stockholm fair tommorrow morning. See you in the fair! Today is Tuesday. Since the last post, I successfully got the felt material. The factory help me to cut the 15mm thickness felt into round circles. I cut other pieces during the weekends. ( around 50 pieces)
The needle felting on the back has gone halfway now. The wooden part. I cut the biscuits joining tracks on Monday. Tuesday, I applied a hole cutter on the drilling machine to cut out the 120mm hole on the borads. (about 30 pieces). From which I got nice looking wooden wheels :) Since the max diameter is only 110 mm on the hole cutter, I have to sand the hole into 120mm, which takes time. I tried to glue the felt on the board. Tommorrow is gonna be the big glueing day. Hope everything goes well. Production phase has reached a busiest time.
Last week I finished all the wood cutting and board gluing. And I just completed cutting the 45 degree angle meeting on all the side boards. Things are going a little bit difficult because the wood changes a lot and sometimes have a curve and I cant use the circular saw to get a perfect angle. A kind of construction was applied on the machine, to press the board to the workingg table. This way I made the angle quite nice, though it takes much more time and energy with all the screws and stuff. But things are under controll and I start the needle felting for the back in the evening. Tommorrow I am going to Halmstad to pick up natural wool felt from the factory. Busy week. I think the weekends will not be free. Though it is Chinese new year, and this will be the year of dragon. This is my year. |
